Disabled people are becoming more visible working in the cultural and creative industries, but are still rarely seen in positions of leadership beyond non disability-related organisations. Some are there, but choose not to focus on their impairments; others feel excluded from ‘crossing the divide’ into mainstream arts and others lack the confidence to push themselves into a leadership role. Sync is a new leadership development programme exploring the current situation from all perspectives, and raising the question: do disabled people experience leadership differently?
Sync is being developed by Jo Verrent (ADA inc), Sarah Pickthall (Cusp inc) and People Create (the organisation who ran the successful Leadership Development Days) and is funded by the Cultural Leadership Programme (CLP). Sync will be driven and informed by disabled people’s perspectives and be accessible and relevant to disabled people and mainstream leadership providers
Sync will deliver two strands
• Sync 100 – a distance learning programme designed to give disabled people key information about leadership and encourage debate, dialogue and reflection • Sync 20 – a bespoke programme for twenty people to take the leadership thinking and the learning that bit further
Sync 100 kick starts in June and runs for 12 months. Any disabled person interested in leadership and working in, or aspiring to work in the creative and cultural industries can join via the website (www.syncleadership.com) or through contacting the organizers. Every member will get a fortnightly prompt asking questions, providing information and food for thought. Members will also be in direct contact with all the other members of Sync 100, exploring different perspectives, ideas and opinions
Sync 20 will be an additional element running alongside Sync 100 for twenty selected? disabled people living in England? designed to deliver Sync in a more tailor made and bespoke way offered personal coaching and get to take part in a national training programme, with additional regional events designed around their needs.
